A Cowork Project: what's actually inside one.

The next move is a Cowork Project (the Pro-tier workspace inside the Claude Desktop app, not the same as the limited "chat Projects" on free Claude): one place that remembers your voice, classes, integrity rules, and standing brief.

What we're building (and why it's called a Coach)

Calling it your Personal Academic Coach on purpose. A folder is a thing you put files in. A Coach is something you have a relationship with: one that knows you, pushes back when you're slacking, quizzes you when you're vague, and remembers the integrity lines you drew in Module 0.

A Cowork Project is three things stacked.

Context

Files Claude can see in every chat inside this Cowork Project, without re-uploading. Syllabi, Voice Profile, "How I Learn" doc, Honest Work Code as your personal AI policy. Claude reads it once at the start of each chat and treats it as background.

Custom Instructions

The standing brief. "Talk to me like this. Always do these things. Never do those. Default format is X." Set once; applies to every chat in the Cowork Project. This is where your integrity rules live as enforceable behavior.

Every chat you start inside the Cowork Project gets the context + instructions baked in. Every chat outside doesn't.

Without a Cowork Project: every chat is a fresh stranger. With a Coach Cowork Project: every chat is a friend you've already briefed. The context-pasting at the start of every plain chat? Disappears.

Why now is the lesson Pro starts mattering.

Lesson 1.1 said it: free Claude carries you through Modules 0, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Pro is the line at Module 6 because the Application Profile lives in a Cowork Project. It is also the line at Module 7 (this one) because Cowork Projects are a Pro feature. And it is the line at the Capstone (Module 10) because the Student Dashboard is built out of three Cowork Projects.

Honest answers about Claude Pro

  • The price. $20/month at the time of writing.
  • What you get beyond Cowork Projects. More messages per day, longer conversations, larger files in uploads (callback to Lesson 1.2), priority during peak demand, access to the most capable model. The thing you'll feel first is the message cap: Pro is the version where you stop watching the message counter.
  • What Pro doesn't change. Privacy settings (Lesson 1.4) stay the same. Integrity rules (Module 0) stay the same. Hallucinations (Lesson 2.4) still happen. The 2-Minute Verify still rules. Pro is faster and remembers more: it isn't more honest than free Claude.

Module 7: the build sequence

  • 7.1:Why a Coach Project (this lesson). The case. The roadmap. Going Pro on purpose.
  • 7.2: Build the Coach: Context. Create the Cowork Project. Upload the four staple files: Voice Profile, Honest Work Code (your AI policy), the "How I Learn" doc, your active syllabi.
  • 7.3:Custom Instructions. Write the standing brief. Tone, format, verify habits, and the integrity hard-lines as enforceable behavior.
  • 7.4:First Three Workflows + Maintenance + Stop Signs. Run a study session, start a paper, do a weekly planner: all inside the Coach. Plus the Sunday refresh ritual and the four times to spin up a plain chat instead.

Your Cowork Project is the integrity infrastructure of your school year

Honest Work Code · Rule 2: your work survives scrutiny. Module 4 taught the spectrum, the Hallway Test, the process trail. Module 6 taught the Dinner Table Test for application work. All of those are practices:things you have to remember to do, on every assignment, for the next four years. The Coach Cowork Project is what turns those practices into infrastructure. Your integrity rules go into the custom instructions once and apply to every chat from then on. Your voice profile keeps the writing yours without you re-pasting it. Your syllabi mean Claude can never claim something is due that isn't. The Coach is what makes "I learn with AI, not instead of it" something the room is set up to enforce.
